MOTIVATION: MEXICO CITY, 1968

Pictures always speak louder than words and this photo has single-handedly given me the motivation to write again after a multi month hiatus.

Jordan Campbell- Norco, CA

To kick off our Athlete Interview series, it is my pleasure to interview former fellow Trojan Jordan Campbell. An exceptional talent and hard worker, Jordan is the epitome of an Outlier as he surrounds his entire life by wellness. Multiple daily workouts, rehab treatment, healthy eating habits, good faith, education, and balancing it all out with a bit of family and fun, with a work ethic like his, Jordan is next in line for NFL greatness.

History:
A high school All-American, Jordan came into his collegiate career with high expectations of having an immediate impact on the collegiate scene. However, like most freshman's, he was redshirted and forced to wait. Beginning his redshirt freshman year, and the remainder of his time as a Man of Troy, he competed for playing time, but his true talents on the field were never fully showcased during his time there. Due to all the turmoil plaguing various USC teams during the 2010 year, Jordan saw the NCAA regulated "free transfer policy" as a "blessing in disguise", and an opportunity to take his stronger and more developed mental and physical game to the University of Louisville. A brief career at UofL, Jordan again faced set backs and made the wise decision to move back west to care for his family. Taking on the responsibility of caring for his Grandmother, Jordan never stopped living a healthy life. He took the off-field education that he gained at both institutions, and with his older brother, created the company " Circle of Success", or "COS" http://www.circleofsuccesscalifornia.com/.
The concept behind the company, is embracing a lifestyle of having a circle of success surrounding you, and the company continues to spread positive messages throughout the fashion, entertainment, and athletic industries.

Where is Jordan Now?
With the success of his company skyrocketing, Jordan is now hungrier than ever to get back to his linebacker roots. A more humble and determined man, Jordan WILL be a top pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. What makes me so confident? Hearing the story of a friend, and fellow Trojan athlete as a changed man. The ups and downs he has faced both on and off the field have made him grow. Now at 24 years young, Jordan is living a lifestyle that will ensure success comes to him, and not the other way around. Now playing for "the worst division 2 school" New Mexico Highlands, while others thought they were doing him the favor of letting him continue to play collegiate football, Jordan again saw this as a blessing in disguise. Returning to the base of fitness he grew up on training with older family members, Jordan cross trains, and prepares his body for the next level. "Going to the big Division 1 schools is where I became less of an athlete, training to just be Big, strong, and fast and being stuck in a football, lift weights mentality was not the best thing for me". With an open minded attitude, Jordan began crossfit and UFC style training, with the goals of improving all the things that had previously been overlooked by D1 trainers. "Lets see if I can get my balance better, my core better, and I just took on a new challenge with everything that I never did. It was fun and competitive for me". For all those who have seen Jordan's famous YouTube videos, most would say "fun" is a crazy choice of words, for the freakishly intense training he has proved himself capable, and it is evident that Jordan and his circle of success are "eatin". With the New Mexico team built around his determination, experience and talent, Jordan and his teammates are racking up pre season honors and the most attention they have received in years. For starters, Jordan became the first ever pre season All-American from NMHU. If that wasn't enough, several football teams including the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants flew out to see the superstar at his junior pro day. With their national attention and recognition increasing by day, The New Mexico Highland Cowboys are sure to have eyes on them this upcoming season as they push towards the national championships. Keep up with the New Mexico Highlands this season by following the online feed from the games, via the link below.

Off the Field
Jordan is clearly and exceptional, elite athlete. However, it is what he does off the football field that makes him an Outlier. Family, and faith orientated Jordan practices what he preaches by having a circle of success. One of the things we stress the most about being an Outlier is incorporating every element of wellness into your daily lifestyle, one which includes social wellness. "I used to be that guy, out in Hollywood that knew everybody and all the parties, however all of the connections that I made while at USC and being connected to the right people, gave me a better network for the future. But now I don't see anyone, its all about my circle of success and those in my camp". That network has surely helped carry Jordan on the right path, however his new attitude with his tight nit success group is proving to be more beneficial for the athletes overall wellness than his previous lifestyle. He has shown and proven that no matter what level of athletics you are on, it is important to constantly build your success circle, take care of family, as well as build healthy professional connections. " Its funny because now that I'm not chasing the perks of success and just focusing on my dream, everything is coming along with it."

We look at professional athletes like Gods who were given an unlimited supply of resources and that's why they dominate their respective sports. Exercise and Music: How Exercising with Music can Increase your Wellness

How exercising with music can increase your wellness:

Following the playlist I posted, I wanted to share a recent paper I read by Dr. Mark Anshel, entitled Exercise and Music. In the paper, Dr. Anshel discussed how during exercise, music can influence our performance, effort, and motivation. Below are key points from his paper.

Music and Exercise:
  • "There are two likely reasons moving in rhythm results in superior performance: the distraction hypothesis and momentum. The distraction hypothesis says that the performer is distracted by the external stimuli of music, which allows the person to ignore the effects of intense physical activity, such as fatigue and exertion. We use a strategy called external attentional focusing. The second explanation of improved momentum is that music improves our forward motion, resulting in less effort."
  • "Music alters our nervous system: Heart rate can be increased within 10 seconds of listening to music that is fast-paced and loud, while our heart rate usually slows down when exposed to music that is slower-paced and relatively quiet. This is because hormones are released into the blood stream that immediately either increases or decreases our arousal level, such as heart rate, respiration rate, and other physiological processes."
  • Guidelines for listening to music During Exercise:
    • 1) Listen to music that you enjoy. If you choose something that is annoying or distasteful, it will only cause stress
    • 2) Select music that is compatible with your goal. For example, if you are doing an aerobic workout, it is best to listen to something with an upbeat tempo. For pilates or yoga, use something that is of slower pace.
    • 3) Try to use music that allows you to move in synchronization to the exercise being performed
Due to the increase of technology, there are many useful applications that allow you to sync your music to your workout. I most recently downloaded the free IPhone app Nike Running. It does not require any additional equipment, and with a simple tap, it tracks your mileage, calories burned, and time spent running/walking. It is perfect for those like myself, who do a simple lap around their work building, or do more than "stretch their legs" during the business day. With this app, you do not need to attach anything to your shoes or your person, just run with the app, and let the voice command coach encourage you throughout the way!

Review: Earthbar, West Hollywood, CA

Earthbar, in West Hollywood, CA is my new favorite spot for reasonably priced healthy items. With a variety of locations, the West Hollywood location where I visited was convenient, had great customer service, and was overall a great experience! For my first time there, I tried the popular WeHo Breakfast smoothie, which included "banana, almond butter, almond milk, vegan protein, blended with vanilla almond granola". At 253 calories, this shake not only filled me up until a late lunch hour, but also provided me with an immense amount of energy for the morning.  For everyone looking for new healthy breakfast ideas, meal replacement shakes, or just something tasty and healthy, I would highly recommend visiting Earthbar.

Gear Review: Women's Sprint- Vibram FiveFingers

The company Vibram FiveFinger first caught my attention in the year 2008 when I began my collegiate career at The University of Southern California. The fitness trend of barefoot exercise had been growing popular due to the release and enhancement of the popular Nike Free and the knowledge that was available about the benefits of barefoot running. This past weekend, at Sports Chalet in Corona, CA, a pair on sale for $49.99 caught my attention. Normally priced at $80.00 or higher, I saw this as my opportunity to venture out into the world of barefoot exercise, without the opportunity cost of sustaining foot injuries from various surfaces. The customer service I received was amazing. Not only did they find the perfect size fitting for me, they also showed me a pair of socks that went with shoes to prevent blisters and odor caused from sweat. Before I even purchased the shoes, I had fallen in love! Running around the store like a kid in a candy shop, I anticipated the many adventures I'd have in my new FiveFingers. This lightweight flexible shoe has limitless mobility options, if not better than your own true barefoot. With microscopic grooves in the rubber sole, the traction you receive is good enough for running unstable trails, and playing water sports! I can honestly say, I wish these shoes were in my possession when I was an elite sprinter.

After wearing them for a full day, I was still impressed. Running errands, driving, even going to the driving range to hit a few balls, these shoes had not caused me the normal foot arch, and lower back pain I would endure after a full day. They are cushioned very well, and even as the day progressed, I still felt as if I was not wearing anything on my feet. However, nothing is perfect. I did not like the way my right pinky toe would sit in the shoe. This could be from the way I was favoring that side of my foot, or due to the lack of wearing the specially made socks which would have avoided this discomfort. Nevertheless, these are my favorite athletic shoes for any occasion, and I look forward to the many venues we will venture to together.

Recipe of the Day

In honor of our favorite summer holiday, Independence Day, I want to start the blog off with a tasty BBQ inspired meal to serve to your friends & family on the 4th. Although it does not sound like your average healthy meal removing the skin before eating, as well as using as many fresh vegetables as possible for seasoning purposes. This recipe serves six, and its total prep time is only an hour 45 min. See below for ingredients and and preparation.

Source: Recipe inspired by http://www.eatingwell.com/recipes/beer_barbecued_chicken.html

Ingredients

  1. 1 tablespoon smoked paprika , (to be found in the grocery spice section)
  2. 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  3. 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  4. 1 teaspoon packed dark brown sugar
  5. 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  6. 1/2 teaspoon onion powder (substitute with real onions for a healthier option)
  7. 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (substitute with real chopped garlic for a healthier option)
  8. 1/2 teaspoon ground chipotle chile , ( to be found in the grocery spice section)
  9. 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper (substitute with real chopped bell peppers for a healthier option)
  10. 1 4-pound chicken
  11. 1 12-ounce bottle beer, preferably pale ale or American lager, divided

Preparation

  1. Preheat a gas grill (with all burners lit) to 400°F or build a fire in a charcoal grill and let it burn down to medium heat (about 400°F).
  2. Combine paprika, oregano, salt, brown sugar, cumin, onion powder, garlic powder, chipotle chile and pepper in a small bowl.
  3. Remove giblets from chicken (if included) and trim any excess skin. Loosen the skin over the breast and thigh meat. Rub the spice mixture under the skin onto the breast meat and leg meat, a little on the skin and inside the cavity. Tuck wings under the body and tie the legs together with kitchen string.
  4. If using a gas grill, turn off one burner (leaving 1 to 2 burners lit, depending on your grill). If using a charcoal grill, move the coals to one side. Wearing an oven mitt, carefully place a drip pan under the grill rack on the unheated side. Place the chicken breast -side down on the rack over the pan. Pour half the beer into the cavity (it’s OK if some drips out into the drip pan).
  5. Close the lid and roast undisturbed for 45 minutes.
  6. Turn the chicken breast-side up. Pour the remaining beer into the cavity. Cover and continue roasting until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh without touching bone registers 165°F, 30 to 45 minutes more. Transfer the chicken to a clean cutting board; let rest for 10 minutes before removing the string and carving.
